Hello I am Debjani!

 I am a doctoral research scholar in Media Studies at Central University of Punjab. I work with women in rural India and study their interactions with mobile media. 

I have worked as a print journalist in India for seven years writing for publications like The Times of India, Ranchi Times, Morning India, The Telegraph and Firstpost.

I have a degree in video production and I have worked on several documentaries in Jharkhand, India. 

Films, digital cultures and lived experiences inform my research in rural India. During my two year stint in the development communication sector (I worked on message dissemination on health and livelihood interventions for non profits working in rural India), I realized the need to go beyond the normative understanding of the emancipatory effect of technology on people.

Despite our best efforts to use mobile phones and internet to make information dissemination smoother, I realized that technology is not neutral and not the magic elixir that would solve all problems. I felt the urge to address that.

Thus began my research journey in the summer of 2021. I joined my PhD under Dr Chhavi Garg at Central University of Punjab. 

In the years since, I try to document and write what I observe. I shoot content, write for journals, and most importantly read.
